Type II Diabetes Mellitus

Mode of Action

• Metformin
  Belongs to a class of drug called as Biguanides. It is used to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus. It works by decreasing the glucose production by inhibiting gluconeogenesis and glycogenolysis in liver.
• Glimepiride
  Belongs to a class of drug called as Sulphonylurea. It is used to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus. It acts as insulin secretion enhancer. It works by increasing the amount of insulin released by the pancreas in order to lowers the blood glucose level.
• Pioglitazone
  Belongs to a class of drug called as Thiazolidinediones. It is used to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus. It acts as insulin sensitizer. It enhances insulin sensitivity in peripheral tissues and liver by activation of PPAR-gamma receptors (Peroxisome proliferator -activated receptor gamma) & improving peripheral uptake and utilization of glucose in muscle and fat, finally decreasing liver glucose production.
• Voglibose
  Voglibose is an alpha-glucosidase inhibitor which slows the digestion and absorption of carbohydrates resulting in improvement of post-prandial hyperglycemia.
